former executive of the defunct rebel
movement, Liberians United for Reconciliation and Democracy (LURD),
Madam Aichia Conneh, has confirmed that ex-fighters of the
disbanded rebel group have crossed over from Liberia into
neighboring Guinea and are presently occupying several villages
and towns in that country.
She disclosed that the ex-fighters are in
Guinea to participate in the current crisis in that country. Madam
Conneh, who earlier denied involvement in recruiting ex-fighters
into Guinean, said those engaged in the act are people who do not
want peace.
She condemned the recruitment noting that it
would spoil the good relationship between the two countries.
In a statement issued recently in Monrovia,
the former LURD executive claimed that certain individuals in
Liberia were using her name to recruit ex-fighters to fight in
Guinea.
She said any recruitment of Liberian
mercenaries to take participate in the ongoing disturbances in
Guinea will be detrimental to peace and security in the entire West
African subregion.
Madam Conneh warned ex-fighters from Liberia
not to allow themselves to be used for another conflict and called
on the government to arrest anyone caught recruiting ex-fighters in
the country for subversive activity in Guinea.
"The Liberian government should move quickly
to arrest anyone caught recruiting ex-fighters for any operation in
Guinea to assist either the government of Guinea or engage in war
affairs", the statement said.
Recent reports coming out of Guinea said Madam
Conneh, who is the spiritual daughter of ailing Guinean President
Lasanan Conte, is directly involved in the recruitment of ex-LURD
fighters to fight alongside loyal troops of the Guinean government.
She denied the allegation, but confirmed that
her private residences were burnt down both in Mecenta and Conakry
by angry protestors.
