Anti-Mandingo/Moslem Hate Emails

February 05, 2007

It's often the case in many societies that people who respond to discriminatory and other societal ills directed at their groups are labeled negatively and vilified more than the issues they are responding to. For instance, in Liberia, those of us who have had the audacity to talk about the anti-Mandingo-Moslem discrimination have been wrongly accused of promoting tribalism. When mosques and Quran are desecrated, when others illegally occupied Mandingo and Moslem homes and properties, when Mandingoes are selectively harassed at check points, and even when some public officials make ignorant comments about the Mandingoes and Moslems, the people who would call some of us "tiribalists" are silent, only waiting for us to say something so they can accuse us of promoting tribalism.

As member of the Limany website editorial board, we have often received hate mails from some fellow Liberians who out of envy and jealousy can't seem to stomach the fact that after the war that should have eliminated us, the Mandingoes are still in Liberia and vocal on issues of national concerns more than ever before.

Just few days ago in the wake of the Edwin Snow's situation, we have received two hate emails from two different persons. Both seem to have been written by the same person with two separate names. The writer(s) wants us to publish the letters on our website. The writer(s) want publicity, want to be known, want people to take them seriously. We have decided to publish portions of their letters without their names being mentioned because we want to deny them the opportunities of seeking their 15-second fame through our esteemed website. They want to be known for doing something and we cannot help them achieve their desire goals when it's clear their intentions are anything but positive.

Usually, we have thrown these kinds of letters as trash. The main reason we are sharing some portion of these hate mails from these hate mongers is to let the pundits who would accuse us promoting tribalism know that we are not the tribalists and that we are indeed the victims of tribalism in Liberia. Whenever we talk about these issues we are responding to an endemic tribal and religious discrimination in the Liberian society against the Mandingoes and Moslems.

Below are the two distasteful letters. You will read portions of the first letter, followed by that of the second one.

Dear Sir:

I write to inform you that my attention had been drawn by your increasing criticism against Madam Ellen Johnson. I think it will be very good that you follow the Guinean politic instead of the Liberian politic.

You Mandingos think Liberian are fools, we are not fool... Your site should rather be thinking about the Guinean politic and leave Liberia alone with Liberian. We have credible news media in Liberia like Daily observer, Star radio, Analyst news paper, and many more, they don't report nonessential news. Leave Her Excellency madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf alone with we the bona fide Liberian ,not  konakai Mandingo or madinkai mandingo people.

I therefore urge you to cover the Guinean news on how Lassana Konte slaughtering your brothers and sisters, and stop reporting stupidity about our leader. Another thing is never in the history of Liberia will a Mandingo be a president in Liberia. The only thing you people will do is to join a real Liberian to vote.

Mandingo means backward people, never constructive but barbarian.

Madam Ellen Johnson Sirleaf the most popular African Leader, she made the marks in history

Portions from the second letter reads as followed:

Dear Sir:

It's an increasing jealousy and down heartedness that I observe from your editing on events that are happening in present day Liberia. Look let me remind you about Liberia. Liberia belongs to Liberians and not immigrants Liberian like you Mandingos from forest Guinea to be clear from Bela, Macenta, Misadou and what have you. Please focus on Guineans politics not Liberians politics cause that's  the only place where a Mandingo man can win political victory . Look I say it again cause former President Taylor said it before that there can be no ALCOP victory in liberia. Under no atmosphere that a Dingo can be a president in Liberia. Look this is our land your parents came from Guinea because of hardship. They came as merchants and were allowed to settled down. That doesn't give you as second generation immigrant children the right to import your relatives and extended families in Liberia as Liberian. Look I tell you guys one thing that we know clearly how you guys supported LURD to kill our people but I promise you that like Taylor you guys will see both Kromah and Damate face justice. It is just the beginning of a long isolation of the Mandingo poeple in the new Liberia. The TRC will bring more and more facts out and we will get to know who kill Karpeh, our people in Lofa, Ganta and others parts of Liberia. I will advice follow Liberians who want political victory in Liberia to stay away from you cause your support is not wanted in any Liberian quarters. And further you just cause George Weah his presidency what a pinful moment in his life. Please stop writing stupid headlines about our leader or president. Cause no matter what you do, only a true Liberian can be a president and anybody wanting to be president in Liberia can only win when he or she disassociates his or herself with Dingos. You accept it or not, president Sirleaf is our leader no Dingo can be president in Liberia. Please publish this letter to all your readers.

After reading the above hate emails, we challenge the pundits to state whether or not they agree with the writers of these hate trashes. Our belief is that these letters share sentiment that is ever present in Liberia. Our first reaction to these letters is as followed: Thank you very much Mr. XXXXX. You are only demonstrating your ignorance and bigotry. We will pray and hope that some day you will learn and understand the true history of Liberia. By then you will be cured of the disease of ignorance and bigotry. Now we have decided to share the contents of these letters to remind our reading public about the persistent hate filled discrimination that is still present in Liberia. Who among the pundits agree that these hate emails could have been written by racist white KKK members against blacks in the United States?
